Cuba, Dominican Republic and Mexico are the norm for package deals from the Atlantic Provinces, but there's plenty of hidden gems.
So many people get hung up on the all-inclusive direct charter (me included) and for good reason.
They're often the cheapest and easiest way to have a last minute getaway, without worry or complication. Sometimes with a quick 2 hour stop in another city, you can open up a whole world of possibilities, and many of them aren't all-inclusive.
Hawaii has to be a perfect example, especially for Newfoundlanders. A hop over to Vancouver and then off to Maui. You get there in the evening and go to bed. Next morning you're hiking up an active volcano, or trying to see if surfing is as easy as it looks.
Maui always gets left out when travellers ask about all inclusives, that's because there aren't any.
Instead, you dine on your dollar, from hundreds of fantastic restaurants, or a luau on the beach. Most apartments come with a full kitchen (not a kitchenette) and a barbecue. You can get some groceries and have a get together with the crowd you met on the beach that day. Or, you can have a romantic dinner without making reservations, or being watched. Get your own little piece of Hawaii and show off your cooking talents.
Once you've watched the sunset over an extinct volcano with whales crashing in the distance, you'll know what I mean. So, it's not all-inclusive, but there's soooo much included that you never ever pay for. The memories especially.
One can only hope that the savvy Newfoundlander (and Labradorian) might brave a connecting flight to get out to the Pacific, since I can almost guarantee that there will never, ever be a direct flight from Newfoundland and Labrador, or even Halifax for that matter.
I have fantastic photos of days gone by in Hawaii, but they were taken long before the age of digital (and internet for that matter) so I'll have to get scanning.
I'm only ranting about Hawaii because too many folks just don't know what they're missing!!!
(OK, yes, I'm a travel agent, of course I want you to go there...) but if I have to suggest something off the beaten track of Newfoundland, it has to be Hawaii.
